The United States Singletons was started in November, 1957, by a group of single persons in Cleveland, Ohio who had been active in various groups and organizations. However, they felt there was a need for a new type of organization for single people whereby they could not only meet for fellowship and social activities, but also participate in worthwhile civic and welfare projects.
The selection of candidates for membership is determined by a Membership Committee, consisting of five persons. This process gives each chapter a close-knit group of compatible people.
Chapters must adhere to the national and local constitution approved by the General Assembly at the national convention in June each year. The General Assembly is comprised of the national officers and delegates from each seated chapter. According to the constitution, at least four community service projects must be conducted by the chapter during an administrative year. Social activities are varied, and there are many inter-chapter events. The incorporation of a new chapter is usually attended by members of chapters in nearby areas.
Each chapter has a regular monthly meeting usually consisting of a dinner, possibly a program, and a business meeting. This meeting is an important phase of the Singleton organization, since the chapter keeps in touch with community affairs and broadens the knowledge of its members through programs consisting of speakers, films, and demonstrations of various subjects and current events. All guests (prospective members) who might be interested in learning about Singletons are invited. Through the Membership Committee, they may then be asked to other Singleton functions before being considered for membership.
Singletons find membership to be a rewarding experience for their investment of time and effort - new friends, companionship, fun, and a deep feeling of personal satisfaction in aiding others. It is our intention to have a membership large enough to fulfill those objectives and yet small enough for good fellowship.
